Dark Knights: Metal: The Nightmare Batmen

Dark Knights: Metal: The Nightmare BatmenDark Knights: Metal: The Nightmare Batmen by Peter J. Tomasi
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“All it takes is one bad day!”

That line from the Joker has never been truer. Over the years Batman/Bruce has had a number of “bad days”. Being the hero he is he has always managed to to fight back. However what happens if on one of those days he.

Decides the to take the Speed force

Is given a Green Lantern ring

Takes the power of a “God”

Loses his humanity to cold hard logic encased in metal

Uses a “Doomsday” weapon

Gains the most evil, sick and twisted sense of humor

These are the variants of the dark hero that live in the Dark Multiverse. A place too evil to exist for a too long until now. Barbatos has given them a purpose destroy Earth 0 and have their worlds “saved”. The nightmare Batmen and woman are here and they plan to stay. Each one is every bit a brilliant, tenacious and single minded as our Batman, but without his moral code. Corrupted to the core. The Dark Knight at his worst times 7.

A great comic of the Dragon Ball Super. I do like the condensed less time wasting version of the of the series but the only problem I found in this comic was the action was. It as good as the fight in the series. The were shortened a bit too much.

The book starts from the Frost taking his final form against Goku, till the end of the tournament. Then the start of the future Trunks saga. If the fight were a little better or the technique were a little better explained this would have been an easy 5 stars.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Got to say I love this condensed version of the Dragon Ball Super. I have watched the series, the movies, but this is my favorite medium. It starts after the Boo saga, to the introduction of Lord Beerus, and Goli reaching a power level he never knew existed. The fights are and art work are great and a lot of the time wasting is cutout. There are a couple of differences, the Resurrection F sage is mentioned but does not take place in these books. They jump straight to the Tournament between Universe 6 and 7. Another thing is Goku does not go Blue in this book. He does not lose his “God” form so he stays Red. What to say all the action without the time wasting.

Dark Nights: Metal

Dark Nights: MetalDark Nights: Metal by Scott Snyder
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this story. As much as I did not enjoy the Road to Metal graphic novel as apart from the Forge and Casting the majority of that was back issues of story lines I did not particularly enjoy in the first place so re reading them was not much fun however here I see how threads of them have been used to create this masterpiece.

No question Batman is my favorite superhero. Despite standing in the shadow of overpowered superbeings like Superman and Wonder Woman, most obviously, he is usually the one who come up with the strategy of the final blow for the win. I was glad that was the case in this graphic novel straight from the start.

However:

"Explore too far and you just become the villain of your own story."

Here Batman's greatest attribute mix with the darker sides of his personality, his single mindedness and un-trusting personality, are what the big bad guys have been counting on all along. What if he was not destined to be the hero at the end but the cause of final destruction. Also the nightmare versions of him, who have conquered worlds.

However again I was also glad to see another side of Batman's personality that is overlooked most of the time. This is Hope.

If I had one complaint about this book it is I wish it was longer. It did feel a bit rushed at the end, I would have been happy with another couple of issues and the finally fights made longer and in more detail, but you can have everything. Always a good sign when a comic/book leaves you being for more.

A huge story that features heroes from the DC universe I wish it was longer to give more of the other characters more feature time, or more detailed action panels. However the art work is good and fits the story perfectly the story itself is awesome, and leaves big possibilities to come from this. There is a full page of the cover of each issue at the start of all six chapters, then a cover gallery at the end featuring the variant covers. All in all awesome more please.

Empire's End

Empire's End (Star Wars: Aftermath, #3)Empire's End by Chuck Wendig
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I have to say I was expecting a lot more from this book. For what it was it was ok. The book was very slow in places, infact I think I fell asleep reading it a couple of points. Then the last 130 pages (the book is divided into 5 parts, it really came alive from half way through part 4 for me) was all out action and I did not want to put the book down from then. However this was less then a third of the book, it was a little too late. Another thing that disappointed me was the lack of star power in this book. I can understand the choice (but I don't like it) about keeping Luke Skywalker quite till the Last Jedi comes out, but this is at least 30 years before The Force Awakens, and many years before he started his quest TFA said he started this quest after Ben's turn to Kylo Ren. Leia, Han and Wedge are made after thought, well we did our bits time to move on. Leia ok she is heavily pregnant, and Wedge is in the dog house for his actions of the last book, but Han and Luke missing the last battle with Empire? I do not think that is really going to happen. Having said that it did give other characters a chance to shine and there some huge heroic sacrifices in the final battle. Though these could have still been done with the Rebel heroes there. Like all ways not everyone gets out alive.

The Rebel Alliance is not more it have become the New Republic government, and has inherited all the bureaucracy, and dirty political maneuvering that goes along with it. After the Order 66 style attack from the Empire, Mon Mothma's position has been weakened politically mean while she is recovering physically from the attack. Norra Wexley and her team are angry and intend to capture Grand Admiral Rae Sloane who they blame as the personification of the Empire and the architect of the diabolical attack. Careful what you wish for as chasing Sloane they find the real threat from the true leader of the Empire Gallius Rax. Now for me the Rax was the biggest letdown of the book. Through out the book we are told what a dangerous man he is, but to me he comes across as a pale immation of Admiral Thrawn, I do not see what the Emperor saw in him or how he usurped Sloane's authority. Even though they were many good points of this book and there were the seeds to what would become the First Order, the early pace of the book, and lack of new development in the Star Wars Universe I could not help but be a little disappointed in this book.

Tower of Dawn

Tower of Dawn (Throne of Glass, #6)Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I bow down to Sarah J Maas’ story telling. I have not liked Chaol since the second half of the Crown of Midnight. Also with the last book finishing with Aelin in such a precarious position I personally did not want to wait an extra year to find out what happened to her.

However SJM knows best, every issue I had with Chaol was address in this book. Also if this book would have come out after the next the final book this story would have had the prequel curse where I would have known everything that was going to happen.

I admit I was thinking about Aelin through this book, so I was glad to see her make appearances (only as mentions throughout). This is a great story tying up threads from former books and novellas. I think the “nothing is coincidence” is featured and shown perfectly in this book.

This is a great story about redemption, character development/growth, using left over bits from the other stories to make a great story, and characters finding their own place. Once again it the it is a great credit to SJM’s storytelling skills that she wrote such a great book essentially just the side characters, and made them shine. Especially Nesryn who definitely deserved better then just being Chaol’s backup (in more ways then one). There is also great description about the mental aspect of physical injury recovery, and how much of the process is mental. Anger, frustration, and guilt can be as detrimental to a person’s recovery as the cause of the physical injury itself.

As much as I hate to admit it these characters would not have had a chance to shine like this if Aelin was in this book. If possible this book has increased my anticipation for the next book even more. I can’t wait for the final book of this great series. I am expecting all out WAR, and one hell of a retribution beat downs to all the Vargs.

Empire of Storms

Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass, #5)Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Just an amazing book. My expectations were sky high for this book. The Throne of Glass has been one faverite series in a long time. Every book seemed to get better and better. With these kinds of high hope I was just though this book would let me down somewhere. The only let down is the book is finished and I can't wait for the next one. It not only lived up to my expectations but sapassed them. One thing I will put a note on is there is a lot more explicit passages both in language and scenes. An example unlike the other book where SJM would write "a string of curses sprang from her lips", in this one it is the flat out curses. I have no problem with this but be warned for younger readers.

So much of this book talks about how powerful Aelin is and can become, but it also a reminder of how brilliant she is. There are revelations galor. There are twist and turns and return. This story kept me gripped from beginning to end. Just when I though I had everything figured out it changed again. Also every character/member of "the court" had a chance to shine.

This book just has it all, great characters, great character development, great writing that made me want to just devour chapter after chapter to the point I did not want to put it down during the finale. All this and bucket loads of action. Great continuity in the series, tying together many of the plots lines that were left in not the the other books but the novellas as well. What can I say when a book that is almost 700 pages leaves me wishing for another 700 pages it must be good.

Queen of Shadows

Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4)Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book. The books in this series just seem to get bigger and better. This book is 600 + pages but every page is good and well done. My only complaint is that I would have like more details about the fights more blow for blow account not that "they were already carrion, when she drew her blades". True this would probably take the page count well into the 1000s but I would not mind if it was a well written as the rest of the book. I have always been a fan of Sarah J Maas' "chunking" writing style, where she make some chapters longer as events dictate in some cases half a page for a side event constitutes a chapter.

The last book Celaena's true name and heritage was revealed in this book to reflect this she is referred to as Aelin rather than Celaena, the book also introduced a new character and Manon of the Iron Teeth witches. She and her coven are continued to be developed in this book. For this development and even by the end of the book we are not sure which way she will turn. Many of the characters of the novellas or the collected counterpart Assassin's Blade paperback. The fallout from there is death with in the first half of this book. The body count is higher in this book but there are not as many fights described. What this book does display is Celaena/Aelin's tactical and planning precision yes she can be a hellcat and a hot head, but as wild as she get she is a disciplined and dangerous fighter always thinking a couple of moves ahead. There is a great cat and mouse game between Aelin and her former master.

Aelin returns to Adarlan she finds it an even more brutal place than before. Along with her own vengeance, she must deal with the fallout from the months she has been missing, one disadvantage is all the training she did to hone her powers in the last book, is lost as magic does not work in Adarlan. However her physical training is still useful, and has made her even more formidable. She has embraced her heritage of the Queen (I have to say I love the title of the "Fire breathing bitch Queen"), now she must assemble her court. This is big book with big time ramifications and revelations. All in all great.

Heir of Fire

Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3)Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Brilliant. Sarah J Maas is becoming my favourite author. Her writing style is engaging, engrossing, intelligent, and easy to follow. Her imagination and storytelling are amazing. This story is a lot slower than the Crown of Midnight; it concentrates more on the character development.

At the end of the last book we learned not only who Celaena Sardothien really is but also what she really is. Her relationship with Chaol is in tatters. Having "suggested" to the king to send her on a mission for her own protection, and cutting Prince Dorian out of the loop, Chaol is in no man’s land. Distancing himself from Dorian, for Dorian own protection, he starts to do his job notices some irregularities with a certain high ranking general. This forces Chaol to make some decisions of his own, how long can a good honourable man serve a tyrant like the King of Aldarlan and his many atrocities.

Dorian is more alone then he has ever been, but he does manage to find solace. Finding company is not really difficult for a handsome prince, but who can he trust. This is triply difficult as he has to not only keep his own actives which his father will not approve of secret, his friends secrets, and most of all his magic.

We are also introduced the Iron Teeth Witch Clans and especially Manon Blackbeak. Meanwhile Celaena detours from her mission and pursues her own agenda. Meeting forgotten and powerful relatives. Before she is allowed to get the answers she wants she must claim her heritage (her powers). She must learn to control them and master them all the while putting he shattered life and her past. I really like the way she has to train and relearn everything. Just because you are in a stronger body does not mean you can control it especially in a fight situation.

Great story, very character driven and impossible to put down. I kept thinking I will just read one more chapter, and flicked a few pages and thought ok I will stop at the next section break, or that's a short chapter might as well finish it. Suddenly half quarter of the book was gone. Despite being 550+ pages the book just flies by. It sets up the next book excellently including a confrontation I have been begging for since the first e-novel.

Crown of Midnight

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2)Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is how you write a fantasy novel. Great characters, development, evolution and revelations. Magic used intelligently, and my personal favourite action. I could not put the book down. I like the way that they characters have their responsibilities and jobs but that is not all that defines them. Celaena has no problem hacking up body parts but she is still a girl who loves to shop. I think even though she is an assassin she sees herself as more of an avenger. She will avenge her friends no matter the cost.

The story Celaena Sardothien won the right to become the King's Champion (personal Assassin) since then she has been charged with dispatching a number of his enemies. In many cases she brings back trophies in the form of severed heads, and family insignias (rings) still attached to the hands. However having no love for the King she has been she has been helping his enemies get away and faking their deaths. The problem is she is too good at it and even her closest friends and biggest supporters believe she has completely turned over to the dark side. Then she is given a target who intersected with her former life in Assassins Keep (Archer) a courtesan (prostitute). This simple assignment sends a ripple effect affecting Celaena and everyone she cares about. They also fills in some history; there is a more detailed account of what Celaena did the day she "snapped" in Endovier. There are also hints that Celaena knows exactly who betrayed her. In the next book I am begging for a showdown with the King of Assassins, but so far Celaena has already made enough enemies to keep her busy for a good long time, which is great news for a long series. The only thing I did find annoying in this book is the right characters suddenly appearing exactly the right moment, but will all the fate and prophecies in the book, this could be easily explained.

I am a fan of Sarah's writing style having chapters of different length, and almost chunking the chapters so information is easy to take in and broken up for me. This might be a fairy tale setting but that is where the similarities stop, this is more the grim story tales type of book, with grizzly deaths, torcher, and harsh language (even though the characters do not swear in print, they usually "unleash a string of curse"). I love the Throne of Glass universe. There are references made to not only the first novel but the eBook prequels as well.

This book is a lot more action packed to the first novel, there HUGE revelations about Celaena and Dorian, (who have a Luke and Leia type relationship), as well as the forces that are using them. A great book. Start it and you will not be able to put it down. You do not need to have read the previous stories to enjoy this one but they do help and after reading this one you will want to go back and read the others.

Come as You Are: the surprising new science that will transform your sex life

Come as You Are: the surprising new science that will transform your sex lifeCome as You Are: the surprising new science that will transform your sex life by Emily Nagoski
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ok when I saw the tile of this book it thought probably what everyone else though about this book. (Ok the introduction and chapter 8 and appendix one might be, but the rest is science over myth), If it did not come so highly recommended from a respected friend of mine from uni. I probably would not every given it the first look. Read is as some "light reading" doing her PhD in Psychology. So of course she decided to experiment on her friend to get a male perspective on the book. So let me get this out of the way first. No!! This is not a collection of sex stories. There are actual case studies. They are not written to be provocative but to understand the feeling or the accelerators and the breaks.

Thought Emily does quote a number of scientific theories and is by her own admission a "nerd" (no judgement I have been a proud geek for years), you do not have to be to understand the book, it is written in an easy to read way. I found there is a lot of truth to this book, and even though it is written primarily for women in mind I think both me men and women can lean a lot from it and will see traits of both in the case studies.

I also think there are some very important messages in this book the main one being the first like and echoed through out the book "you are OK. You are normal. You are not broken". Usually when ever we do not fit the mold or something does not live up out our expectations one of those three thought does through our heads. the other messages that she tries to show us are the messages we are bombarded with through out our lives the "that is wrong", "you should look like this", or "that is not normal". I quite like the idea of celebrating differences then persecuting people for them.

This is a great book with a lot of insightful theories, and science against myth and breaking down some pretty big wall. theories of sex ans psychology have been linked since Sigmund Freud, as some theories have moved on others we still have so much to learn about in others. A great book that should be read by everyone, and commented on what you agree with or disagree with.

WWE: Then. Now. Forever. Vol. 1WWE: Then. Now. Forever. Vol. 1 by Dennis Hopeless
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a bit of a mixed bag. Some of the stories were great, some good, a couple of OK to disappointment, though it evens out to a good comic. I will have to admit my biased many of the characters were from my era of watching the WWF/WWE, so nostalgia plays a big factor. The firest was to review these is probably story by story:

Then. Now. Forever. The title story and rightfully so. It show a young Sasha Banks being inspired by a WWE Legend (actually this guy was a legend wherever he wrestled), to her own entrance and evulation in the WWE and passing the legacy on. Short and too the point. I have never seen Sasha Banks wrestle so the rating is not nostalgia based. 5 Stars easy.

Tug Team. Tug Boat Vs the Earthquake a newspaper style short story that shows being a jerk comes back to haunt you. 3.5 Stars.

WWE SDCC 2016 One-page comic feature Stone Cold, The Rock, Triple H, John Cena, The New Day, Sasha Banks, The Undertaker, and Dusty Rhodes. Short and to the point show the point managing to show the characters evulation, finishers, and historic moments all in one page each. Anyone who thingks this is less then 5 stars is not and never was a wrestling fan. 5 Stars

Ladder Match. I remember this being the first Ladder Match I ever saw. The participants Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon. As much as I love that match this is poor mans parody of the match. The dialogue is rubbish with the exception of one signature move in the match. I might have given this 3 stars but they managed to ruin a damn good match. An angry 2 Stars

The Long Con Triple H takes center stage going back to the time of his injury (what would have been to anyone else a career ending injury) to his come back, and a big plan in the background. 5 Stars

Your Good, But… Daniel Bryan's story. (He will always be Bryan Danielson ROH Champion and MVP to me) very well condensed and managing the get most of the important point across. 5 Stars

Kevin Owens comic. The story of Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn storyline. A solid 5 Stars

I wined and dined with kings and queens. Dusty Rhodes Vs Randy Savage (the Macho King). A bit slow, concentrating more on the fans. 3 Stars

In The Mandible madness. This was one of the biggest betrayals in WWF\WWE history. A well done condensed version of this pivotal Undertaker Vs Mankind match. Getting all the important moments. Easy 5 stars

The Natural Disasters Vs the Bushwhackers. In every meeting of these two teams the Bushwhackers got destroyed. This is a short food fight/backstage brawl between the two teams. Was ok nothing special 3 Stars

Give the demon his due. Seth Rollins on dealing with the pressure/terror of dealing with the demonic Finn Dalor. From the mental side of the game and easy 5 Stars

The New Day’s Optimistic Odyssey. A pink and fluffy time travel adventure again was ok but did nothing for me. 3 Stars

The Warrior’s Path. The man that ignited my passion for wrestling. The (storyline) origin of the Ultimate Warrior. I could not give this less then 5 Stars

The Brawler and the beast. An short that tries to be in the form of a folk tale, with little action and a bit of an easy resolution for me. 3 Stars

Welcome Home. The Wyatt family\cult living up to their characters. Did nothing for me 2 Stars

Ten John Cena telling a story about his drive and grit. 5 Stars

Damien’s Dinner A look through the eyes of Jake "the Snake" Roberts 5 Stars

The Gravest Mistake the promo for the Undertaker Vs Kamala. I remember seeing the original promo and this is pretty accurate, but I took one star away as it was not really a note to finish the story on, especially after having In The Mandible madness earlier in the book. 4 Stars

Then there is the cover gallery of the variant covers of the books featured in this. All in all a good solid effort and collection of stories yes nostalgia plays a part but that is what being a fan is all about.

The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism

The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with AutismThe Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism by Naoki Higashida
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a great book to be written by someone of any age and the fact that it is written by a 13 year old is amazing. The book reads like a FAQ of questions that anybody especially a parent of children with Autism or Asperger Syndrome have asked/shouted at their children about why they keep doing certain things. I bought this book after a particularly heated argument with my 8 year old. this book did help at the very least it told me that many of the things I questions e.g. "Why do you keep doing the same thing after I have told you a million times not to?". Yes all kids do this but is Autistic and AS children seem to take it to another level. In between questions we are threated to a couple of short stories written by Naoki. these are great and remember the boy was only 13 when he wrote this book. It shows that creative writing is definitely Naoki's outlet and wrenches at my heart that such a creative and intelligent boy has so much problem communicating verbally or in person.

Two thing to remember about this book. Everyone with Autism or AS is different, but they do share many traits, so as insightful as Naoki's views are for himself might now apply to all children/people. However it does offer a first hand perspective which is otherwise unheard of. the other is the message/theme that Naoki is trying to get across. "DON'T GIVE UP ON US". Yes they might keep doing the same thing when they are told not to, but you still have to keep telling them not to till maybe on the ten million and one time it might get through to the child then they know it for life. As Naoki points out they might not look like it but they are learning slowly but surely they are. This book is a great insight into a great and creative mind that has been trapped inside a body with fewer outlets then are available to the rest of us, however with patience and understand many other children could be allowed to find their own outlet and unleash their ideas on the world.

Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me

Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just MeUnfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me by Lily Collins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I liked Lily Collins the actress (in fact she is one of the few actresses of who I would go to watch a movie simply as it has her name on it), after reading the book I really respect lily Collins the person and the writer. This is not a self help book but more like number of therapy secession written down. Lily shares a troubling experience (nothing in her life is off limit), boyfriend/relationship issues, body type issues, or even bulimia.

This is not a celebrity whining about how they had everything but were not happy. This is Lily discovering and overcoming everyday obstacles in her life. Yes Lily is very young you think how many obstacles could she possible have? She has the same things all the rest of us had growing up, maybe a few less the some few more then others. The thing is young people usually tend to listen to young people. She it the right age (possible looking younger is a bonus) were a young person might thing she is wise but not an adult telling them what to do. Being a celebrity definitely helps her get her message across. Part of the message is that people with these problem are not alone, the longest chapter in this book is the acknowledgements where Lily give thanks to many of the people who have not only helped he out during her life, but also called her on her mistakes. Immediately following this is a section full of address of useful website and organisations for some of these problems and other organisations she has been involved with.

If you are looking for just an autobiography of Lily Collins this is not that, but if you do read it you will have a much better understanding or who Lily Collins the person is that just an autobiography would give you. One of the ways I judge a book is if I am a bigger fan of the person or gaing more respect for the person after reading their book. This is definitely the case here. I would definitely be interested in both watching and reading more of work. I definitely recommend this book to fans of Lily Collins or young people going through a hard time growing up.

Leia: Princess of Alderaan

Leia: Princess of AlderaanLeia: Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

She nailed it spot on. Claudia Grey nailed Leia’s character and characteristics perfectly. I don’t mean to disrespect anybody but I honestly don’t think anyone could have written a better origin story for Leia.

At the beginning of the book, I felt a little disappointed that it was going to be a about young Leia, but book was incredible. Like I said Claudia showed every aspect of Leia’s personality. The princess, the warrior, the patient in-control negotiator, and fiery tempered hellcat.

This Leia’s coming of age story. However another great think about this books is also that Claudia did a great job on the side characters. As any Star Wars fan knows how much Leia’s “father” Bail Organa was involved in the rebellion, but not enough credit was given to her “mother” Breha. Many of her talents if not learned from nurture it was definitely enhanced from there. The final not of praise is the was research and loose ends and cameos in this book. For me everything is this book was spot on.

Recovery: Freedom From Our Addictions

Recovery: Freedom From Our AddictionsRecovery: Freedom From Our Addictions by Russell Brand
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really wanted to like this book and more then I actually did. I wanted to give this book 3.5 stars. It might be the fact that I actually do like Russell Brand and the message of the behind the book more than I actually liked the book.

There are parts of the book that are very good to great, but there are parts that are a bit out of place a couple of Russell’s antidotes seem out of place and I am not sure the go with the step he was trying to portray.

One of the the things that does come across is the idea that this is not an easy process. It is hard work. Whatever a person is addicted to (in my case coffee), they (I) could think of a hundred different justifications why it is ok. Even thought I know I am addicted I am ok with it I am allowed one vice right? The program goes through the process of saying no it is not ok. It is also no good replacing one addiction with another. Also once a addiction is beaten it is a constant battle not to relapse.

The other message Russell preaches/talks of is he was probably more of a mess then most most people do if it could work for him I can work for anyone. One thing that does not probably help this book is Russell is naturally a funny man, but he is talking about a very serious subject where humor works against it. Thought adding a load of F-bombs do not make things funnier or relatable.

All in all quite a heavy book, but someone who has had success with this program, and wants others to enjoy the same thing. However he does remind the reader just because he is on the right path now it is a constant battle for him, and there are people who can’t be saved, do not want to be saved or fall back in their old habits. The battle ground of the soul is constant.

Wings of Spirit (Protected by Dragons, #3)

Wings of Spirit (Protected by Dragons, #3)Wings of Spirit by G. Bailey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A very good book. Usually I get bored if the book is a bit slow, they first quarter of the book is very slow, but the characters and story is so likable that it more then makes up for this. the Last quater of the book is pack to the brim with revelations some we already knew other a bit more of a surprise.

There are also the threads from the other books that are picked up towards the end and big things to come from the series. Now with more of the things in place I am hoping for more action and Dragons in the next book.

Everything comes with a price when it comes to knowledge and magic. What is Isola willing to pay to save her Dragon guards from the curse, and earn the respect and support of her people to reclaim her throne. However Dragca might not be the only world she need to save.

I really like the way things are coming together in this series I like all the characters and the roles they play in the series. I all hoping that they will be a bit more action in the next couple of books as we come to the finally. G Bailey is a mistress of cliffhanger ending that make me want to get the next book now.

Batman and Philosophy: The Dark Knight of the Soul

Batman and Philosophy: The Dark Knight of the SoulBatman and Philosophy: The Dark Knight of the Soul by Mark D. White
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I am not a Philosopher, and truly the only way anyone will get me to read a Philosophy book is to put Batman/Star War in the title or on the cover and making either the subject matter. The book is very informative on philosophical theories, (I will be the first to admit would have been lost on me), and well researched in the world of Batman.

The thing that attracted me to this book was, discussion style format. All of us who are comic book fans love to discuss out favorite stories, characters (their directions, development and decisions), and who would win in a fight between them. I admit my reason for being able to quote Aristotle at my next comic book argument, or point out that well learned and scholars in their field are also comic book/Batman fans.

The book is not a light read and I actually got more then I was expecting for it, on a Goodreads note I was glad to have my 100 book as heavier read. One of the issues that is brought up is Batman being a fictional character, should he be revered, or looked at as an example? Questions like should he kill the Joker fit in with arguments to an for capital punishments in the real world. Also you cannot have a debate about batman without the shadow of death, and the continuing debate of death itself credit to the author and contributors for giving both sides of every argument.

The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is there are a couple of sections in the middle that were for hardcore linguists or philosophers which I felt went slightly off topic and were over analyzed for my tastes. This could be a personal prejudice on my part as I hate linguistics, but that is me. However this is a great book that use the fiction characters to highlight issues and theories that are in the real world. I personally though the second last chapter using the relationship of Batman and Nightwing to reconcile the debate of Aristotle and Immanuel Kant, was inspired and definitely holds true in the real world.

The Power of your Subconscious Mind

The Power of your Subconscious MindThe Power of your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Really enjoyed this book. Even though there is a lot of information imparted in the book and it is, it is broken in to many small sections (chunks as I call them), making the book much easier to read. Even though this books was written many year ago (first published in 1963), everything in the book is still true.

I have always been interested in the topic of the of the subconscious mind, to my it is where ideas are born from, where people conscious personality and actions stem from. I like the idea of being able to program it to work more for my in my daily life was intriguing. As the author say our Subconscious is at work 24 hours a day for every day of our lives. Breathing and heartbeat and all our bodily functions we do not give a second though about even when we are sleeping are controlled by our subconscious.

Being quite a spiritual man Joseph Murphy also builds in many biblical quotes with his case studies, and examples of people he had met. though I do not wholly agree internalizing God as part of the subconscious, I do see where the idea id divine knowledge comes from. Example we are bone we breath are bones and organs are formed, we do not know or have any knowledge of this at the time so how does our body and internal functions know how to function and what to do since birth? I do like the idea of the subconscious being a conduit to the divine how many times do we have something in the back of our mind and it comes to pass exactly as we envisioned it. Other thing like instinct and intuition also come from the subconscious.

This is an great informative, easy to read and most of all helpful book. The difference for me between a good and great self help or psychological book is how many of the idea in the book could be used in everyday life, I did not find anything in this book that could not be used in anyone's everyday life. Also it has stood thee test of time already.

Spirits of Vengeance: War at the Gates of Hell

Spirits of Vengeance: War at the Gates of HellSpirits of Vengeance: War at the Gates of Hell by Victor Gischler
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this book the last issue on its own would have been 5 stars. The other 4 issues I would have given probably 3 stars average. Ge story is ok I have to say though I am not a great fan of the art work, and the dialogue. For such dark, conflicts and angry characters the art and dialogue just seemed to kiddie-ish. I don’t think it worked for me in X-Men and I don’t think it worked for me in this book.

Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze of course), is one of my favorite characters so I was happy he got a big role in this story. Hellstorm grew on me as the series moved on. Satana I did not particularly care about, but she did her small role well. Then there is Blade. Another of my favorite characters but I don’t think he was really needed in this story. I would have really liked for him to be used more or have a bigger contribution.

A good mini series with great promise, and I would not mind seeing these guys team up again, or star in their own series based on this (but with darker artwork), or a sequel to this story. Also a variant cover gallery or issue 1 at the end.

Green Lantern: Earth One, Volume 1

Green Lantern: Earth One, Volume 1Green Lantern: Earth One, Volume 1 by Gabriel Hardman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Not a bad adaptation of Green Lantern. I think this is one of the better Earth One books. I have to says my favorite is the Superman Vol 1. I am not the biggest GL fan so the changes made to the character do not bother me.

I like the darker art work. I hope Gabriel Hartman is available to do the artwork for the next volume of Batman Earth One (hint). I am glad the bulk of the story takes place in space (or on different planets). I personally think this suits GL best.

Hal Jordan is my favorite GL, but this is not the traditional Hal Jordan. This version is a disillusioned astronaut, instead of a hot shot fearless fighter pilot. This suits Hal as I always thought of him as the not mature Lantern compared to Kyle. In this universe the rings themselves do not choose their Lanterns and are more weapons.

Also in this universe there is no longer an established Green Lanterns team, so they have a lot to learn and find out and history to rediscover.

This is a good intro story, and sets up more stories for the future, but is coves everything it needs to if you just want to read this volume on it’s own. At the end there is a couple of pages of bonus art, as well as a page long summary of the whole story.

Striking Thoughts: Bruce Lee's Wisdom for Daily Living

Striking Thoughts: Bruce Lee's Wisdom for Daily LivingStriking Thoughts: Bruce Lee's Wisdom for Daily Living by Bruce Lee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Great book by a great a great person. Though Bruce Lee is most famous for being a martial arts actor, he was a great thinker which definitely enhanced his martial arts prowess. First of all this is not a Martial Arts book. The book is Bruce’s thought process on life.

Though it is written like a philosophy book, it is very easy to read. To quote Bruce himself, he says great thinkers and philosophers have a ways of making what they have to says more complicated then it should be. Bruce takes the opposite approach. Everything he says is straight to the point with no waffle.

Even though I there are many great points in the book and I do take a lot away from it, I don’t agree with every point Bruce makes, but that is part of his philosophy he wants his ideas to be challenged or built on because this shows thinking over blind following, or progress which he was all about. As he says:

“a teachers is never a giver of truth- he is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself.”

There are testimonials at the beginnings of this book of what a great person and teacher Bruce was, but the end of the book I had no doubt about how good he was as a teacher. Not just about physical techniques but about the mental and spiritual aspects of martial arts as well.

As with any ideas I could see many of Bruce’s views in this book were colored by his life expectancies. This is a great book with a philosophical contradiction, though Bruce Lee is a great and successful person to look up to. His message is not to emulate him, but to learn/know yourself honesty, and use this knowledge to be the best you can be.

The Fates Divide (Carve the Mark #2)

The Fates Divide (Carve the Mark)The Fates Divide by Veronica Roth
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I got this on the strength of Divergent not the last book in this series. This was a lot better then the first book. I wanted to give it 3.5 stars but is it such an improvement on the last book I thought it deserved a round up rather then down. It is still very slow paced, and there are probably less fights in this book then there were in the last book, but the story is much better and fills in many of the holes/problems in the first book. There is a lot more political intrigue, maneuvering, and manipulation along with some big plot twist.

The book is written in the first person for Cyra, and Cisi (Akos' sister), and in the third person for Akos himself. This I think was a good choice as in the past Veronica Roth has said she write better in the voice of her female characters.

Since the last book the brutal war on the planet Thuvhe, between the Thuvhe and the warrior nomadic Shotet has been notices and taken center stage in the interplanetary politics. Everyone has their own agenda. With the return of the most ruthless leader for the Shotet people causalities are mounting on both sides. Is all hope for peace gone?

Akos, Cyra and Cisi has seen their fates as both a curse and a burden. Now they might has to accept that their fates were just the start of their journey and their gifts/powers can be used for so much more. Maybe it is the comic fan in my but I love when people push the boundries or find new applications for their powers. These characters current gifts develop as much as their characters in this book.

The book starts off as slowly as the other book left off, you have to get past the first 150 pages for the book to really get going the last 200 or so pages is where it really turner into a page turner. However they are still parts that are drawn out or not the best thought out plans. This could be put down to the characters being quite young and reckless, so no knock on the writing. I good book I am glad I persevered with it.

Quite an informative book, and definitely worth the £1 price tag, (probably a lot more). The only problem I have is it is a bit too short. Till the last chapter the ideas talked about in the book were not built on. I the last chapter was excellent if the rest of the book was like that this would have been an easy 5 stars.

Going back to the length of the book, think they might have been intentional as it is supposed to be a quick and simple read so I that might not be a bad thing. A good book that, I got much more then I paid for it built on things I had read in other books, I would look at this as companion then a main book. However the important message is in there.

Anything is Possible: My Story

Anything is Possible: My StoryAnything is Possible: My Story by Eddie 'The Beast' Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoy this book. I always enjoy books where I feel the author is being fully honest about their experiences and stories wart and all I am told it is called.

I think every man in the world a one point in their/our lives though we were or could quite easily become the strongest man in the world. In this book Eddie Hall tell us exactly what it takes. There is no magic formula, it is physical and mental toughness bordering on torture. Then there is the sacrifice. This burden is not carried alone but must be shared by friends and family members alike. There is also a big difference between strength and health.

The book covers Eddie early and family life and of course his journey to becoming the strongest man in the world. The road is not easy. It takes someone like Eddie’s do or (literally) die attitude to make it happen. Eddie calmly take about injuries and situations that probably would have killed most people. The only thing that is not covered in this book is specific training me. Eddie vaguely says the number of hour he spends in the gym. but not specific of the exercise. The story is more about Eddie life experiences and the sacrifices along the way.

A great story and hard earned achievements and success. Many of which almost cost Eddie his life. A great story but Eddie is not shy talking about cost to himself and his family. A great story as long as you don’t mind a decent sprinkling of f-bombs, though that is just Eddie’s personally and speech so it adds authenticity.

Batman: Nightwalker

Batman: Nightwalker (DC Icons, #2)Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I did like this story, I would have given it 3.5 stars but thought is deserved a round up. Though I cannot say if this was because of my bias of Batman being my one of favorite characters of all time. Though this is also the reason I would take off at least one star. As good as the story is this is Bruce Wayne's story, this is not quite an origin but a before he was Batman story.

One of the things that made Batman different from almost every other character is Superman take off his cape and put on the glasses and lives his life as Clark Kent, Spider-man hangs up the mask and faces his unsuccessful attempt to be Peter Parker (I am talking new Marvel Universe Parker here), but Batman is the true identity Bruce Wayne is a resource for him. It is sometimes said Bruce "died" the day his parents did and the creature of vengeance that is Batman took over and everything in his life since them about his mission to stop crime. On the other hand it has also been argued could Bruce Wayne do a better job then Batman, better funding/equipping the GCPD (Gothem City Police Depaetment), or the city in general to remove the root of the problem. This story seems to take the latter apporach, as Bruce has grown up (he is 18 at the start of the book), as a pretty much well adjusted young man. Haunted by the death of his parents but not driven/obsessed by it.

The parts of the book that were done very well is book showed Bruce's intelligence. He is not just some rich kid getting by on his parents money, going to the best schools because of his family name he is an intelligent young man (still a little naive) doing well at school and shouldering the responsibilities of his company, with good people to help him. He is not as well trained as a fighter, but he has great instincts when threatened he does not flinch away from danger but moves towards it. There some familiar characters and couple of new ones, but I was surprised how little Alfred was used in the book.

This is a good modernization of a story taking a different direction to the traditional Batman. It fits in perfectly in the modern world. If I am being honest I thing this story would have suited Terry McGinnis more then Bruce Wayne, especially with Technology making up for training (though as Bruce has gotten older he has had to put more tech in his suit to compensate). However it is a likable and a good story, but it needed Batman!!! I did find it funny in the acknowledgments page the author said part of the reason she wrote this is because she could say "I am Batman", but she does not write it in the book, actually Batman is not mentioned in the whole book apart from the title. This story is more White Knight then Dark Knight but good.

Wonder Woman: Warbringer

Wonder Woman: Warbringer (DC Icons, #1)Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

An ok to good book. I would have liked to give it 3.5 stars. There are parts of the book that are really good but there are some very slow. I think part of what I had to overcome in this story, was forgetting everything I already knew about Wonder Woman. I think Leigh Bardugo did a great job of Diane, but not quite as great on Wonder Woman. However this is not a bad thing as in this story, Diane is quite a bit younger then previous incarnations of her have been, and has all the inexperience and insecurities of growing up. Therefore she should not by the warrior she is to become yet.

This is a complete remake of the origin story. It is set in the modern world not in World War 2 time. One subtle point I really liked was when Diane and the Amazon’s talk about “man’s world” they don’t just mean men but mortals in general. I liked all the side characters in the book, I think they were written really well except when the Greek “Gods” appeared. I know Wonder Woman’s history is based on Greek mythology, and if they were just mentioned that was fine, but a couple of times they appeared I still do not understand why, and the other I think the story would have been better for Diane to triumph or fail on her own. I would have also liked more fight in the story considering her warrior heritage. Though I did like the final fight, the the one before that sucked.

All in all a good take new take on Diane. I would not mind a continuation of this incarnation of Diane to returns as the true warrior/Wonder Woman, I think there is enough left to warrant that.

Legends over Generations

Legends over GenerationsLegends over Generations by Ashraf Haggag
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received an ARC copy of this book I have no connection to the author Ashraf Haggag.

This is a great book mainly concentrating great leaders of the 18th to 21st century, however there are honorable mentions of a couple of great leader/cultures or people from earlier.

The book starts are with the author stating his reason for writing this book, the takes a short/summary biography style format to person. It talk about what they were best known for, there lives/legacy’s and finishes with some of there most famous quotes. These quotes were especially informative for me as I had heard many of the all through my life but never knew who they are actually from.

This is the first book of Ashraf’s I have read, I must complement his writing style, because he managed to the right amount of information of each person. This made the book informative without overloading me with facts, and engaging. As soon as I finished one section I went to the next one. The proof of this is how fast I finished it. It is very rare to finish a non-fiction book in just two sittings.

I only have one complaint I have with this book is in the last section, the arts and literature legend’s section. This is my personal opinion/prejudice I don’t think film actors should be regarded in the same level as the others. Yes I understand acting is an art form, an these mentioned were at the top of their field, as probably more popular then the others, but I don’t think their contributions changed or shaped the world. That is my only gripe.

This is a great informative and engaging book, I would recommend it to anyone who who has more than a passing interest in modern history.

The Alliance (The Evox Chronicles #1) You heard it here first! This series is going to be big!!!!

The Alliance (The Evox Chronicles #1)The Alliance by Chris G. Wright
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A great book set in a not so distant but dystopian world. The start of a great series for me. I can not wait to see what happens next. This book is more of an introduction to the main characters of this series, world building and choosing a side.

The aliens have arrived, the came and they destroyed. Now humanity is an endangered species. However humanity is not dead yet! One of the things I really liked about this book is that as much as the humanity has come together in the aftermath, our dark nature and emotions are still active in the select few bad apples. Also the aliens might not be as together as the human think. There is good and bad on both side. Heroes will rise no matter the costs, villains with go deeper into their greed nature.

The action passages are great but I would have liked more of then, but I understand that this book is more about introducing the readers to the world and characters. The only complaint I do have in this book is the same complaint I have about Chris G Wright’s inspiration/mentor R A Salvatore’s recent books. This is a personal peeve of mine. I hate battle scenes that are broken up to check up on what the other characters are doing. Eg in the middle of a batter see what is going on elsewhere, then go back to the battle. For me as good as a battle scene is I find this a bit distracting. However that is my only complaint.

If this is the quality of the series I will be here for the long haul. I can’t wait to see what happens next. With the characters, and battle lines drawn I am expecting the war to be in full swing on all fronts.

The mighty Chewbacca in the Forest of Fear

Star Wars The Mighty Chewbacca in the Forest of FearStar Wars The Mighty Chewbacca in the Forest of Fear by Tom Angleberger
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I quite liked this book. It wanted to give it 3.5 stars so it definitely deserved a round up as it is good good for 3 stars. Yes it is aimed at younger readers, but it does add something to my Star Wars experiences. The book is also quite well researched, it is written in the third person, and mentions facts from other book and time periods from the Star Wars universe.

Han has got himself captured, and Chewie has been sent on a dangerous/suicide mission to get his release. joining him are a familiar re-purposed Imperial security droid from Rouge One on his own mission and young adventurer with her own reason for doing in this mission.

I have to say I love K2's dry wit I think Tom Angleberger got his dry delivery spot on. I like that Chewie got his time in the spotlight in this book. It emphasizes that he is not just the brawn of the pair but all his other skills and characteristics from being a great pilot to his loyalty and courage. The loyalty and camaraderie between people sent on missions like this really come through. Even if they do not like each other they have a healthy respect and bond with they other members of their team.

A good story a bit kiddie in places but good non the less. One thing that I did find disappointing is they are very few illustration in this book, and they few that are there are very similar, though the story does make up for it. Lots of short chapters a good easy read that adds to the Star Wars universe.

Too big to fail

Too Big To FailToo Big To Fail by Lesley Finch
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I wanted to to really like this book but I just could not really get into the book. I think it was partly as I really could not take to any of the characters.

The banking offices of Kruger Partners old money and old habits are in full fling. The company does not take any A - C there is a double D minimum, right the way down to the L’s. Sexual favors are norm and innuendo is the first language. Will 4 new interns survive the summer and is there life after Kruger’s?

I think in some cases less is more, there seems to be little story going from one scene to the next.It just seemed the same thing over and over again. I would have like a bit more story in between.

Star Wars: Most Wanted

Most WantedMost Wanted by Rae Carson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Thank you Rae Carson for getting Han Solo spot on. After reading Last Shot I was a little worried about reading another Han Solo book. I think it makes a big difference when a book is written by a fan.

I enjoyed this book right from the beginning, Rae I think managed to capture all the aspects of Han’s personality. He is cocky, but loyal and compassionate. A “scoundrel” but with great leadership qualities. Han is famous for his piloting skills, we see his natural aptitude for it in this book, but others skill Han has but are a bit overlooked on the movies and books is his ability to think quickly (improving), his understanding of languages and he is a pretty handy mechanic as well.

The side characters are done really well too. I think Qi’ra was also introduced very well. I liked the fast paced setting of the book. I also like how Han and Qi’ra’s relationship changes and their characters develop through the book.

An excellent introduction to a very (possible 18 year old) young Han Solo definitely showing the traits of the legendary character he is to grow into.
